Gunnfríður Jónsdóttir

  • Year : 1955
  • Height : 216 cm
  • Width : cm
  • Category : Skúlptúr
  • Sub-category : Steinskúlptúr

Location: Hljómskálagarður The Settler Woman is the large last piece which Gunnfríður created, in 1955. This is many ways a very typical work for Gunnfríður, who was fond of our forefathers, foremothers and the exceptional women of Icelandic Sagas in particular. The work may be indirectly related to the memory of two Icelandic women, Hallveig Fróðadóttir and Auður the Deep-Minded. The work also references female settlers in a broader sense, not least pioneer women in the art world, including Gunnfríður herself, the first female sculptor in Iceland. The Settler Woman stands tall and looks straight ahead. Gunnfríður does not seem to have been interested in dealing with problems related to form, she creates a stationary memorial of this symbol for female pioneers, with full respect and veneration for the subject.
