Location: Selásbraut Ingi Hrafn finished this sculpture in 1974, after having carried the idea for a few years. Falling Rate of Exchange was first exhibited in an outdoors exhibition in Austurstræti which was planned by the Icelandic Sculptors’ Society for Reykjavík Arts Festival 1976. The sculpture, which originally was titled “Depreciation of Currency”, was bought by the city in the same year and installed on a lawn in Árbær in 1977. At the time of its creation, inflation was high and the króna’s rate fluctuating, and thus the artist commented: “This felt like an appropriate thing to do, as long as I can remember the rate of exchange has been falling or rising in Iceland.” The pedestal beneath the work came later, or in 1982. When the sculpture was being lifted on top of the pedestal, it fell to the ground, which was thought to be quite fitting. The work was then repaired and installed on the pedestal a little later.
