Jóhannes S. Kjarval

  • Year : 1948
  • Height : 130 cm
  • Width : 160 cm
  • Category : Málverk
  • Sub-category : Olíumálverk

In the summer of 1948, Kjarval stayed in his old home village of Bakkagerði in Borgarfjörður eystri, east Iceland. This was his first painting expedition to his childhood home for more than 20 years. His motifs that summer were mainly the mountains surrounding Borgarfjörður. Native Haunts is painted from a high, broad perspective. The artist looks over the expansive fjord where land and sea meet, a few red-roofed houses nestle beneath the mountain by the sea, small and defenceless against the mighty ocean and mountain.
