Ásmundur made The Beacon in Reykjavík in 1953, in bronze. This is one of only a few works by Ásmundur in which he works primarily with material, line and mass. The work is a “drawing” in the space, which is based upon the interaction of strong vertical forms and a lyrical curved line that encloses the space. The only reference to concrete reality is in the title, and the vertical form which stands upright like a flaming beacon or torch. The artist’s precise concept behind this work is unknown. While the theme of a burning beacon is primarily biblical, signifying purification (cp. Candlemass, the Feast of Purification of the Virgin Mary, 2 February in the Catholic calendar), it is more probable, in view of similar pieces by the artist at this time, that he intended to present a beacon of the new, the dawning age of technology. The Beacon can thus be seen as signifying enlightenment and human ingenuity.
