Location: by Tjörnin. The Hiroshima Peace Stone is located by a lawn at the southwest end of The Pond, where an annual candle floating takes place, in remembrance of those who died in the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima on 6 August and Nagasaki on 9 August, 1945. The work is a gift from the Stone for Peace Association of Hiroshima, founded in 1991 by an ex manager of the Hiroshima Railways at the time of the bombings. The work is created from a stone which was used in the railway line foundation and close to one hundred countries have received such gifts. The stones are decorated with a carving of the Goddess of Mercy, “Kannon” in Japanese, as well as the inscription “From Hiroshima”. The stone lay 200 meters from ground zero. A report which accompanies the artwork states specifically that the stone is not dangerous and its radiation is far below recommended limits.
