Location: East-end of Fossvogskirkja Owned by Flugmálafélag Íslands. The Glitfaxi Memorial (1955) is one of Einar Jónsson’s last works, he agreed to its location just before he died. The memorial was installed beside Fossvogskirkja, in remembrance of all those who have perished in plane crashes. The name Glitfaxi also references all those who died on board the plane Glitfaxi as it crashed during a scheduled flight en-route from Vestmannaeyjar to Reykjavík on 31 January, 1951. The National Aeroclub of Iceland had the work installed on October 15, 1955. It was unmarked until 2006, when the Aeroclub had a commemorative plaque fastened to the pedestal, citing the artist’s name and the title of the piece, along with the inscription: “In remembrance of all those who have perished in aviation accidents.”
