Location: Ásmundarsafn Sculpture Garden. Ásmundur made Giantess in Reykjavík in 1948. The original version was made in concrete and obsidian. The sculpture was enlarged in 1975, and a cast was installed in the Westman Islands later that year. Giantess makes little or no reference to reality; it represents the artist’s vision, though with some allusion to nature. Giantess comprises a mountain, rock and caves; Icelandic nature is known to have been a powerful influence on the style and formal language of the pieces made in the 1940s, in which the artist works with themes from Icelandic folk and fairy tales. In Bókin um Ásmund, the artist speaks about trolls and art: “It makes me uncomfortable to see artists drawing naturalistic trolls. Trolls always remind me of mountains. Iceland has trolls in plenty... to my mind, naturalistic trolls don't exist. But that’s just me, talking to myself. Other people must see their own visions.”
