When two of his sons died, saga hero Egill Skallagrímsson was stricken with overwhelming grief. It cannot have been by chance that Ásmundur chose Egill's poem, Sonatorrek (Lament for Lost Sons) from the Saga of Egill as his theme in 1948, a year after his daughter died in a car crash. Ásmundur's piece depicts the moment recounted in the saga when Egill's daughter Þorgerður urges him to sublimate his grief in poetry. By the same token, it is likely that Ásmundur's younger daughter, together with his art, provided him with the solace that enabled him to work through his grief. Ásmundur’s Lament for Lost Sons thus combines a classical literary motif with a deeply-felt expression of his own experience.
