Location: Iðnó. The work is a two metre high sculpture from bronze and basalt. It is both figurative and abstract, the top half is literally a rock, but the bottom is a cast of the body of an appropriately clad bureaucrat, i.e. wearing a suit, who is holding a briefcase. Today, the briefcase is symbolic for an office-worker of old, but the sculpture is a timeless symbol in itself. The bureaucrat seems completely relaxed, with one hand in his pocket, despite carrying all the burdens and responsibilities of the world. Here, Magnús plays around with different material and methods, the result is at once comical and striking. Originally, the sculpture was located in a garden behind Hótel Borg, or more precisely between Lækjargata and Pósthússtræti. Now it has been transferred to a much more prominent place in front of Iðnó. The transfer took place in 2012, at the initiative of Reykjavík Art Museum, to make the sculpture more visible. At the unveiling in the new place, the artist himself is quoted as saying: “Now he has stepped off his pedestal, down to the ground.”
