At first sight, Hildur's Gingham-works appear to be tablecloths, stretched across blind frames, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that the gingham material is far from being a mass-produced cloth. Hildur builds the surface of her paintings from scratch, she takes identical linen threads to those who are used in canvas for artists, dyes them with acrylic paint, weaves them into a gingham pattern and stretches them across the frame. The work is a traditional painting and a woven material at the same time. She uses craft methods to throw a critical light on traditional ideas about paintings and attempts to destroy the distinction normally made between crafts and arts.
