The piece is based on Martin Aitchison’s illustrations to the biography of Rubens in the book Great Artists (1971), written for children by Dorothy Aitchison, which Erró came across in Bangkok. This biographical painting can be read like a comic strip. Rubens' life is told in eight independent scenes, arranged in chronological order, each depicting an event from the artist’s life. The piece starts with a scene of Rubens as a yawning young man dressed as a squire, and ends at a festival in Antwerp to celebrate the official visit of the Spanish king's brother. Ruben is said to have been given responsibility for the decorations, and designed the victory arch and coaches used for the festivities.
