Systurnar á Stapa

Jóhannes S. Kjarval

  • Year : 1948
  • Height : 100 cm
  • Width : 158 cm
  • Category : Málverk
  • Sub-category : Olíumálverk

The Sisters of Stapi depicts sisters Sigurborg, Gullý and Kristín, daughters of Kristbjörn, from Arnarstapi at Snæfellsnes. Previously, Kjarval had painted a picture of them called Jöklablóm (Glacier Flowers). Later, he went on to create a third version of this painting, titled Upprisan og lífið (Resurrection and Life). These three paintings show how living models change and develop in Kjarval’s hands, he creates one image after another of the same motif, each in their own style, giving them new meaning. In this work here, the girls have wide faces and big hair. Their features are exaggerated and they have lines drawn in their hair, giving them an unearthly, almost ogreish appearance.
