This anti-racist piece is dedicated to Nina Thoeren, a friend of Erró's who was raped and murdered in Los Angeles in 1960. The culprit was a black Bible salesman. Race and sexuality are intertwined in this piece, by which the artist alludes to his dream of a future where both will cease to exist. The artist commented: “A series of fifty drawings of couples, drawn over a period of two months, was used as a reference for the painting. The composition is grounded in four anatomical drawings of a vertebral column reflected asymmetrically (projected onto the canvas using a slide projector). The heart at the centre of the piece is in four parts; one is white, one black, another yellow and the last red. These four colours, blended together throughout the picture plane, refer to the four main races of mankind.”
