Mt. Dyrfjöll are a part of the mountain range, surrounding Eastern-Borgarfjörður. They derive their name from a great rocky pass between high peaks, the taller being 1136 m high. Mt. Dyrfjöll can be viewed as the signature mountain of Geitavík, the farm where Kjarval grew up. He spent the first four years with his parents in Meðalland, South-Iceland, but from then on, he lived with his mother’s half-brother in the east. He returned there often as an adult, to paint the mountains and landscape from his youth, and this works dates from 1927.
