Location: Fógetagarðurinn. On 16 June 2000, the Bishop of Iceland, Mr. Karl Sigurbjörnsson, on behalf of the Cemetery Planning Committee, presented to the city of Reykjavík a memorial for the ancient Vík Cemetery. The memorial was installed in collaboration with the cultural committee and the department of environment and planning, as well as the horticultural manager. The work is located at the corner of Aðalstræti and Kirkjustræti, the location for Reykjavík’s cemetery of old, until 1838 when Hólavellir Cemetery was consecrated. The sculpture comprises three greystones between 1.72 and 2 meter tall, and they stand approximately 25 cm apart from each other. The back of the rock is natural, the sides have been cut, and on the front, bas-reliefs are carved into a sawn surface, referencing the cemetery’s history and Christianity in Iceland.
