Location: Ásmundarsafn sculpture garden. Ásmundur liked to depict people at work. Here, he creates a piece around the spinning wheel, which women sat at for hours at a time and spun the wool. When the spinning wheel is operated, a low burr can be heard which must have been the background noise in every living room. The shape of the spinning wheel, and the sound, could represent the wheel of time. Ásmundur himself enlarged the work and the resulting piece was installed at Laugar in Þingeyjarsýsla. During the fifties and sixties, metal was Ásmundur’s preferred material. His style became abstract, although it’s still possible to glimpse familiar outlines in the work (reification). The space in each piece forms a big part of it, and they become even lighter, to the point of appearing to float away. The shape became pointier and sometimes geometric (circles and straight lines), particularly when he worked in iron.
