Location: By Perlan, Öskjuhlíð. Robert Dell was awarded a Fulbright research grant to develop a sculpture with geothermal connections, which was temporarily installed in Krýsuvík but now stands at Perlan in Reykjavík. Dell, a renowned professor of engineering, used his extensive engineering knowledge to execute the technical side of his ideas, but with his sculptures he attempts to make the forces of nature visible and tangible. Dell is a pioneer of sustainable art, he believes it is important that the art harmonises with nature and does not encroach on it in any way. Dell’s sculptures express variability, as they are created from material which changes according to the weather and the wind, for example copper, which reacts quickly to changes in temperature and changes colour. Dell also uses crystals, which spread light while simultaneously referencing the earth’s compression energy. He claims his work forms exact, technical and material systems which together create an artificial biome of sorts.
