Location: Klambratún Lava is around two metre high stone sculpture by the Polish-French artist Lipsi. It is stacked from six lava rocks which combine to form a stately column but touch each other only loosely, or so it seems. The sculpture was a gift from Francois Mitterand, then President of France, to the Icelandic people in 1983. The French Culture Minister at the time, Jack Lang, said the piece was a gift to the Icelanders to testify of the cultural influence of the French. Originally, the sculpture stood at Hagatorg in front of Hótel Saga, but it was installed at Klambratún in 2002. Lipsi was a distinguished sculptor during turbulent times in mainland Europe and was first and foremost enthralled by whatever material he worked in each time. His sculpture, Lava, is an ode to the material. Apart from his stone work, Lipsi also created art from wood and ivory.
