Made in Reykjavík in 1971, this iron and copper sculpture is one of the artist’s last works. Here he depicts the image of a bird, a simple cutout in sheet iron with lines of copper that indicate the bird’s wingspan, while also demarcating the space around the sculpture. This work, like so many of Ásmundur’s iron sculptures, maintains a delicate balance between being an autonomous sculpture, and a depiction in metal of recognisable objective reality. The main form is a sheet of iron which the artist has found and placed, almost unchanged, into the work. But the title opens the observer’s eye to the image of a bird; it is as if the artist saw in the simple shape the form of a bird, which he then accentuates by means of the copper “wings” and the title.
