Ray of Life, made in Reykjavík in 1960, is of iron, copper and Plexiglas. The work is abstract, comprising a triangle, a circle and cords. The sculpture stands on a circular base, from which diagonal forms emerge; these are secured by cords, which also serve to demarcate the space encompassed in the work. In this work the artist plays with contrasting forms and materials: intact, closed forms vis-à-vis the openness of the cord structure, transparent Plexiglas vis-à-vis dark iron. This work, a “drawing” in the space, is one of a handful of pieces by Ásmundur which evokes primarily an aesthetic response in the observer. “This is my latest piece,” Ásmundur said in an interview in daily Þjóðviljinn on 21 August 1960. “I call it Ray of Life. It’s dedicated to all the unknown creators in Iceland, all those who sought beauty and inspiration, in any form. I remember my old grandmother. She had so many ornaments. Yet she was quite a poor woman. I had her in mind when I made the sculpture Ray of Life. In all that poverty, people wanted to make something beautiful, own something beautiful, have something beautiful to look at.”
