Ásmundur created the Phoenix in Reykjavík in 1961, from copper, and the work was enlarged two years later. Phoenix is an abstract work, although the forms correspond strongly to a bird’s anatomy. The form is simple – only three triangular copper plates welded together to form the torso, neck and head, and two feet. Around the bird form, iron lines form sketches in the air, they define space, or the room for the bird, and can also be interpreted as wingspan. Seen from different viewpoints, the bird form shows irregular movement and a similar dynamic to when a bird lands or takes off. The phoenix is a mythical creature, originating from Ethiopia. It is the most beautiful bird in the world and lives for a long time. It has the ability to be reborn from its ashes. When death approaches, it builds a nest from fragrant twigs and then erupts into flames after generating its own heat. Thus, the bird’s symbolic meaning is rebirth and immortality.
