Location: Outside Reykjavík High School Ásmundur made Face of the Sun in Reykjavík in 1961, in copper. Enlarged to eight times the original size in 1969, it was installed outside Reykjavík High School that same year. Face of the Sun is an abstract, symbolic piece, comprising circles, triangles and lines that slice through the space. In formal terms the piece is concerned with space and motion. The large circular form demarcates a specific space, which is repeated in smaller circles within the piece. This stable form – the circle – is disrupted by a sharp, triangular flat form, and lines which crisscross through the work. As always in Ásmundur’s works, the forms are laden with meaning: the large circle is the sun, while the triangle is the earth. The lines through the work are the rays of the sun. Face of the Sun is an ode to the sun’s energy, the premise of all life on earth. Owned by Reykjavík High School.
