Made in Reykjavík in 1959, the work is of iron and copper. In this work the artist has broken away from the approach seen in his previous works, which were characterised by massiness. Now he “draws” in the space using lines of iron – some sharp, others curved. But on closer examination it transpires that the forms evoke something tangible: broadly speaking, we can distinguish a human figure with a rectangular head, holding a bow in its hands. The title provides a clue that the work depicts an incident recounted in Old Norse mythology: in the world of the Norse gods, troublemaker Loki tricks the blind god Höður into shooting the flawless Baldur with an arrow of mistletoe – the only plant from which Baldur is not immune from harm.
