A winged horse, or the fabled steed Pegasus, is one of the recurring motifs of Kjarval's works, appearing as part of a picture or as the main theme, as in Pegasus and the Girl. Kjarval's interest in this image of poetic flight of fancy is closely entwined with his interest in literature and poetry. The being beside the winged horse is a good example of the tall, slender, graceful creatures which often appear in his works from this period. The work is classified among Kjarval's fantastical paintings; the background story of these pieces is rarely documented – few of them are dated, and many were never exhibited. Most of the beings depicted spring straight from the artist's imagination, although there are exceptions to this rule, as in so many aspects of Kjarval’s art. In these pieces the storyteller Kjarval cannot restrain his imagination and creates a lyrical fairytale, brimming with playfulness and life.
