This piece is a collage-painting, that is to say a painting based on collage. Erró came up with this technique in Paris in 1959. In this way he made about a hundred collages composed of pictures he selected from technical magazines and popular papers; this technique was much favoured by Dadaists and Surrealists. He cut out images from publications such as L’Usine nouvelle, Life, Elle and Marie-Claire and used them in the mechanical collages Méca-Make-Up, in which machines and mechanical parts are spliced together with various organs from the human body. He then chose from these collages some pictures which he used as models for the paintings in the Méca-make-up series, of which Piano-mouth is an excellent example. This series relates to the theme which is at the heart of Erró's art at the time – the mechanical in human existence.
