The sculpture of the “Negro” was a student project, made when Ásmundur studied for few months at the Académie Julien in Paris in 1928. A depiction of a naked male figure, it is primarily a straightforward anatomical study that provides clear evidence of Ásmundur’s knowledge and skill in the fundamentals of sculpture. This piece is especially interesting as an objective comparison with the formal language that would later typify the work of Ásmundur. Interviewed by editor Matthías Johannessen in Bókin um Ásmund, he said of Negro: “It’s just photography... I made that sculpture for fun in Paris, to practise on the greatest variety of subjects... it was good practice, good training. And necessary. It’s good to get to know oneself, to find out what one is capable of.”
