In December 1922, Ásmundur fell ill with pleurisy and was hospitalized. He was away from his studies until February 1923 when he created a memorial to Grettir. The sculpture depicts the moment of Grettir's death. The original sculpture is lost, but he later developed the subject matter in a cubist style.
