Location: Sandskeið The environmental art work The Lighthouse of Iceland was installed at Sandskeið on Hellisheiði outside the city of Reykjavík on the occasion of the city being chosen one of Europe’s Cities of Culture in 2000. This is a lighthouse which, unlike other lighthouses, stands far inland, not visible from the sea, and is also far away from inhabited areas and the beaten track. Its light glows day and night into the four cardinal directions. The lighthouse is a bit of a paradox, as it can’t serve its purpose without people seeing it. In an interview, the artist, who has previously installed art works off the beaten track in other countries, claimed that “the poetry and the resistance of the work lies in the absence.”
