Kjarval’s paintings often contain figures in nature. He personified the landscape, painted faces and bodies in the lava and was inspired by folktales of giants and elves. He often painted in the same locations, the same landscape, showing diverse creatures. Here, it’s fairies by Mt. Vífilfell, just outside Reykjavík. The fairies are translucent and merge with the land. A creature sits on a rock a little further away.
