Borghildur studied at The Icelandic College of Art and Crafts and at the start of the 1960s also at the Edinburgh College of Art. She held her first solo exhibition in Ásmundarsalur in Reykjavík in 1983. There, and in the following exhibitions, she showcased work where she used both clay and glass, and even some natural rocks. For a long time, clay and glass was her main material and the work constantly became larger and more abstract in form. Around the middle of the 1990s, she started moving towards concept art and using more varied materials, even photographs. During her long career, Borghildur has held solo exhibitions, for example in Kjarvalsstaðir, ASÍ Art Museum and the Akureyri Art Museum, but also in Canada. Borghildur has participated in numerous group exhibitions and artists’ projects around the world, and her work can be seen in public buildings and many museums. She has curated several exhibitions, including a retrospective of Róska’s work, and also done some writing.
