In this work, Ragnar Kjartansson appears as a frontman to a small jazz orchestra in a staged retro ballroom. The artist repreatedly sings “Sorrow conquers happiness”, the work’s only words, hundreds of times, over and over. Without deviating from the simplicty of the phrase being sung, he is surrounded by the slowly building suspense of the variations coming from the orchestra behind him, and the passage of time within the repeated mantra. Theatrical and dramatic, the work attempts to liberate human emotion from spiritual crisis and provide a sense of consolation in the melancholy of human existence.
