Birgir Andrésson

Birgir primarily explored color systems as the formal language of Icelandic culture, its landscape and art history. The exercises in color were earnest, futile, and superfluous; the artist’s palette is “real” insofar as any trait can be considered inherent in a culture. They are a sort of derivative translation or extraction, illustrating Andrésson’s perceptions of his home country and personal upbringing. In this case, the stenciled words "blackest night" conjuring the long dark Icelandic winters, while the work might also evocate something near or something far, or a dark state of mind or human condition, in contrast to comething light.
