This piece is part of Erró's series Art History, in which he juxtaposes parts of works by famous Modernist artists (Picasso, Miró, Matisse amongst others) in the spirit of a “scape.” Unlike other pieces in the same series, in this work Erró brings together portraits of artists associated with the same school of art, works by German expressionists such as Bechmann, Dix, Felixmüller, Grosz, Kirchner, Kokoschka, Schiele etc. Erró found all of the raw material for the painting in Frank Whitford's book Expressionist Portraits (1987), which he bought at a German art museum. The composition is based on an undulating “iron net” – drawn up by a computer – which holds everything together in a wave-like formation. It is as if the net has fished up all these past images from the river of memories and now displays them on the surface of the picture plane.
