General Collection
The general collection of the Reykjavík Art Museum comprises about 4,000 works by around 640 artists. The collection has been built up through purchases by the City of Reykjavík, and well as generous gifts from private donors. From the mid-20th century various Reykjavík municipal institutions had their own art collections, but with the foundation of the Kjarvalsstaðir gallery in 1973 acquisitions were formalized. Most of the pieces are by Icelandic artists, and the collection contains some of the most famous paintings in Icelandic art history. In addition to the general collection, the Reykjavík Art Museum has special collection of works by three major Icelandic artists: Erró, Kjarval and Ásmundur Sveinsson, in addition to pieces in public spaces in the city.
