During the 1940s, Kjarval started taking trips to the Skaftafell District, staying at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, with a studio in the old schoolhouse. There, he met a young boy, Guðmundur Guðmundsson, Erró (b. 1932) who was allowed to watch him paint and experiment himself with old paints and canvas. Kjarval painted this profile of Erró at the age of 16, immature but resolute. Later, when Erró moved to Paris, they exchanged warm and friendly letters.
