Friðrik, who was a pioneer in the field of sports and religious issues, was born in Háls on 25 May 1868 and died in Reykjavík on 9 March, 1961. He graduated from high school in Reykjavík in 1893, and studied at The University of Copenhagen for a few years, where he became acquainted with the YMCA. On his return to Iceland, he studied for priesthood and graduated in 1900. The previous year, he had founded the YMCA in Reykjavík and his main occupation became to guide the young people of Reykjavík in religion and sports. He also laid the foundation for the work of sport club Valur at Hlíðarendi, near Öskjuhlíð. Hence, the history of Valur and of Rev. Friðrik go hand in hand, and the priest’s words; „the competition must not overpower the beauty of the game“, have been the club’s motto. The members of Valur sports club celebrate Rev. Friðrik’s memory and stick to the tradition of gathering on the morning of his birthday each year and paying their respect to the bust by Ríkarður Jónsson.
