Location: Skerjafjörður. The work is no longer visible. In this installation, the Icelandic word n-á-t-t-ú-r-a (nature) is written on the beach with concrete letters. It’s like the ocean itself has been labelled and put on show. The installation is by a popular path along the sea, but since it was installed it has gradually been disappearing into the sand. Originally, one of the main ideas of sculptures was that they would last a long time. They stood on tall pillars so the viewer had to look up to them, and were seen as almost eternal. The work Nature has now almost disappeared from view, it’s become a part of nature and could maybe be labelled environmental art. The sea is indifferent; the tides come and go, and the letters have most likely been disturbed from their original and exact position. Their weight and shape interrupt the sand’s crawl back and forth on the beach, a weak resistance which sooner or later will come to nothing.
