Language becomes more than a means of communication in Jónsson’s work. He is particularly interested in the language acquisition of children and when adults adopt a new language. On his excursion into the world of language, Jónsson visualises it as a sculpture, or space. For example, he took pictures of students of foreign origin studying Icelandic. In his work Icelandic Language Laboratory (1996), you can see people in a classroom with headphones on their heads, repeating the words they hear.
