Kona að strokka
Ásmundur Sveinsson
- Year : 1934
- Height : 190 cm
- Width : 90 cm
- Category : Skúlptúr
- Sub-category : Málmskúlptúr
Location: At Árbær Museum and by Erpsstaðir The work, made by Ásmundur in Reykjavík in 1934, depicts a woman churning milk into butter. Woman with a Churn is, like many of Ásmundur’s works of that period, a solid, massy piece. Everything is done to emphasise the weight and mass. The sculpture is a static composition comprising two elements in absolute equilibrium, based on vertical and horizontal forces. Only the posture of the head lends the piece a slight elasticity. While the artist has placed the emphasis on form, the piece is a naturalistic depiction of the traditional method of making butter, and an ode to the women of Iceland, past and present.
