Location: South of Hljómskálinn, Hljómskálagarður. As the title indicates, this is a statue of the great poet and natural scientist, Jónas Hallgrímsson. It is the first outdoor art work by an Icelandic artist to be installed in Iceland. Originally, the statue was supposed to stand where The Culture House is today. However, as the work wasn’t ready on time, it was installed on the corner of Amtmannsstígur and Lækjargata in 1907. The statue stood there until 1947, when it was moved to its present location, south of the pavilion in Hljómskálagarður Park. Einar himself was never quite satisfied with this statue, but those who commissioned it insisted on an exact likeness of Jónas. He would rather have created an image which displayed his admiration for the poet. The statue is typical for the sublime monuments of the time, and stands atop a tall pillar
